Design plays a crucial role in the functioning of our consumer society. But the work of designers can also be a key to an ecologically and socially sustainable way of life. DESIGN WITH A PURPOSE shows examples of how design can take responsibility, even though it is a tool that was developed in the course of destroying the planet.

The objects and projects presented by DESIGN WITH A PURPOSE create ways to value materials, energy, and humans without relying on exploitation. They tell stories and create relationships instead of promoting superficial consumption. And they challenge existing systems with fresh solutions – all without losing sight of aesthetics and functionality.

From everyday objects to crafts and the food sector, DESIGN WITH A PURPOSE brings together over 20 positions that have been created on behalf of and in the context of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. Without claiming to present a solution to the climate crisis, the examples on display prove that design can be responsible, sustainable, and inspiring.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: PRODUCING RESPONSIBLY shows how design directly reduces negative impacts on the environment. The projects in TELLING STORIES communicate, warn, and inspire. RETHINKING CONNECTIONS is about design that fundamentally intervenes in systems. Many of the exhibited projects were created as collaborations and concern more than just one of these areas.

An exhibition of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK commissioned by Klima Biennale Wien.
