Weltmuseum Wien
Neue Hofburg, Heldenplatz
1010 Wien
Living together with camels and their close relatives shapes cultures. It is a source of livelihood for people around the world and part of their cultural identity. In a special exhibition scheduled to begin in 2024, the Weltmuseum Wien will explore the many aspects of life with dromedaries, Bactrian camels, llamas, and alpacas and will examine the effect that these animals, broadly called camelids, have had on the societies of which they are part.
Featuring films, photographs, artworks, and artefacts from the collections of the Weltmuseum Wien, several of which will be on public view for the first time, and with numerous loans from other institutions, the exhibition in six galleries narrates encounters with camelids past, present, and future.

The Curious Case of the Camel in Modern Japan: (De)Colonialism, Orientalism, and Imagining Asia? - Lecture by Ayelet Zohar
83
Weltmuseum Wien
Neue Hofburg, Heldenplatz
1010 Wien
The event will be held in English.
In her lecture, Ayelet Zohar critically analyzes camel images as a metonymy for Asia as well as Japanese attitudes towards the continent.
The lecture reads into encounters with the exotic animals, from Nanban art, realist Dutch-influenced illustrations, through Misemono roadshows of the first camel-pair imported in 1821. Modernity and Japan’s wars of Pan-Asiatic fantasies associated camels with Asia’s poverty, bringing camels into zoos, tourist venues, and military zones, as lowly beasts of burden, while post-war images project the image of exotica and foreignness on camels as Buddhist ‘peace’ messengers. Zohar convincingly argues that in the Japanese imagination, camels serve as signifiers of Asia as Otherness, the opposite of Japan’s desire for self-association with Western cultures.

(Un)Known Artists of the Amazon - Exhibition Opening
83
Weltmuseum Wien
Neue Hofburg, Heldenplatz
1010 Wien
This exhibition is a project jointly undertaken by the Weltmuseum Wien (WMW) and the private Museu de Arte Indígena (MAI) in Curitiba, Brazil. The show’s curators, Claudia Augustat (WMW) and Julianna Podolan Martins (MAI), engage these two museum collections in dialogue, reflecting thereby the manner in which autonomous works of art have evolved from functional and ritual objects.
Centred on Indigenous art from Brazil, the exhibition traces how public perception of this art has changed. Its makers have been considered rather as mere bearers of their respective communities and traditions, void of any kind of individuality – hence, unlike the MAI, which names almost all artists and to whom it also fosters ongoing relations, the WMW only rarely names the artists among its collections.
The visual references discernible in the most widely differing art forms, are remarkable. They highlight the fact that Indigenous Brazilian art – past and present – is informed by a principle of aesthetics running throughout the human world, thereby linking to the ecological and spiritual environment.
Programme
Welcome – Jonathan Fine, Director of the Weltmuseum Wien

Have you ever heard or observed bees and other insects buzzing? They fly diligently from flower to flower and make sure that our food can grow - so they are very important for us humans!
